It’s summertime,
summertime, sum sum summertime
So sang the Jamies in ’58, warbling a
“one-hit wonder” best described as living rent free in your mind ever since
the first time you heard it. And today, June 21st, is officially
summertime 2006.
Well no more studying history
And no more reading geography
And no more dull geometry
Because it’s summertime
Forget about monsoonal flows, West
Nile, heat rash (does anyone ever get “gaulded” anymore), week long visits
from relatives, plugged Rain-Birds and the summer equinox dictating a daily
erosion of sunshine hours ‘til just before Christmas, it’s summer time and
while fall, winter and spring possess unique charms, summer seems the season
of choice across the age spectrum.
Ah summertime! From today until the
autumnal equinox, shorts are acceptable at most any social occasion, sandals
too. Comfort comes first when temperatures edge toward triple digits.
Speaking of one hundred degree days does a cold beer ever taste as sweet or
cascade down the gullet so effortlessly, can life’s mood be any more mellow,
than after working up a soaking summer sweat.
Summer is early morning pedals
through the vineyards and orchards of East Orchard Mesa, family trips to
Disneyland, rodeo’s, Country Jam, swimming at Lincoln Park, visiting Grandma
(“are we almost there yet?”), strolling the farmer’s market in the heat of a
late Thursday afternoon, trips to Denver and screaming the day away on
Elitch rides before strolling to the other end of Lodo and spectating as the
Rockies roam Coors.
It’s time to
head straight for them hills
It’s time to
live and have some thrills
Come along
and have a ball
A regular
free for all
Summer’s for high country exploring, fishing Little Eggleston, hiking Crag
Crest, fat tire biking around Lake Irwin, wetting a fly in Taylor Park,
rafting the Green, kayaking the cold waters of Glenwood Canyon, sleeping
under the stars on a boat anchored in a Lake Powell canyon, or loafing the
afternoon away over a sandwich and bottle of vino while basking in the sun
of a restaurant patio beside Vail’s gurgling Gore Creek.
Well I’m so happy I could flip
Oh how I’d
love to take a trip
I’m sorry
teacher but zip your lip
Because it's summertime
Summer foods explode on the taste
buds. It’s potato salad season, Olathe Sweet Corn is right around the
corner, as are home grown tomatoes, the prime ingredient in a BLT, summer’s
the paradise of Jimmy Buffet’s ode to a cheeseburger, and there are
countless opportunities for funnel cakes, turkey legs, cotton candy and ice
cold lemonade. Summer is family reunions, neighborhood picnics, bar-b-ques,
a “hot dish” and watermelon.
We’ll shut them books and throw em
away
And say goodbye to dull school
days
Look alive and change your ways
It’s summertime.
So remember the water bottle, critter repellant, SPF 30 and comfortable
shoes.
It’s summertime, summertime, sum,
sum summertime.
Enjoy! |
