Great Places to Hang Out on the Net
As the saying goes teach a man to fish and he can feed himself but show him
the internet and he’ll go away and not bother you for weeks. I love surfin’
the net. Here are a few of the places that contribute to my continually
hanging out on the net for hours on end. Be sure and add a .com to the end
of their name should you want to drop in at some of my favorite addresses.
Google -
The greatest, just type in a subject, any subject and see where it takes
you. Most folks start by typing in their own name. I did and found out all
about the lyrics to a song by the rock group Tool. One of the band members
name is Maynard. Lucky me.
Deadspin -
A
favorite and number one in clicks when it comes to sports blogs. The
author, living in NYC but hailing from Mattoon, Ill. Is an Ilini hoops
junkie. I can relate since I go back to the Whiz Kids, Harry Combs,
Memorial Gymnasium and Harv Schmidt. But I still root for the Hawkeyes when
it comes to Big 10 hoops.
cbssportline.com
- Where I can catch up on scores. Much better than wading through the
treacle that is ESPN.com.
foxsports.com—Because
columnist Jason Whitlock is, week in and week out, a great read.
The Big Lead - my personal favorite in sports blogs. Continually
interesting, continually entertaining with a total lack of the usual bs one
is totally subjected to in the blogosphere.
latimes.com -
Great paper, great website. I know intellectuals prefer the WSJ, New York
Times or Washington Post. Intellectual I ain’t. Besides almost anything
worthwhile i.e. The Wave, right turns on red, designer pizzas and
semiconductors started in the West.
gjsentinel.com -
How I keep up with all things George, Henrietta, RJ, Gary and NASCAR.
sportsbybrooks
- a daily compendium of the off-beat found in sports pages across the land
plus there is the occasional picture, no more than 5-10 a day, of very
healthy young ladies. sportsbybrooks is a great way to start the day.
vail.com -
great way to keep up with snow conditions at my favorite resort plus the
mountain cams let me know the weather on I-70 before I get on the road
heading from Junction to Denver.
wikipedia -
the people’s encyclopedia, with something about almost everything
firejoemorgan -
opinions on baseball by a stats geek. Love this site. The author is snarky
to anyone not a slave to .OPB. He’s the baseball equivalent of a guy who
knows 105 ways to make love but doesn’t know any girls.
si.com -
website for my favorite magazine. When football season is over I miss Peter
King. His weekly musings are extremely well written provided you skip past
the love letters to man-crush idols Bill Belichek, Tom Brady and Brett Favre
but Mr. King’s 10 Things I Think I Think plus his open confession to being a
coffee nerd (he even admits to liking Starbucks --yeah) make this a weekly
must read.
howstuffworks -
just what the title implies. I first became aware of this site reading
Thomas Friedman’s The World Is Flat. Half the stuff I don’t understand but
that’s progress. I never understand any of it before starting.
Sltrib.com/columnist -
how you read Robert Kirby three days a week.
Lvrj.com -
the address for keeping up with the celebrity of Las Vegas as detailed by
Norm Clarke plus the sports columning of Joe Hawk.
denverpost and
insidedenver -
denverpost and insidedenver—websites for the Denver newspapers and how one
keeps up to date on the Bronco’s, Nuggets, Avalanche, Rockies, Buffs,
Pioneers, Rams, Crush, Mamouth and the very occasional something else that’s
interesting on the far side of the hill from Grand Junction.
Coloradohomers.blogspot.com—A former CU Buff basketball player, he
sat for Ricardo Patton, blogs Colorado sports. Beware, most postings
contain the “f-bomb” which is totally unnecessary but hey it’s his blog. It
also contains extremely funny and totally biased view of Colorado sports.
desmoinesregister -
the only way to keep up to date on the RAGBRAI route plus details of
“America’s team” the mighty Iowa State Cyclones. From time to time they’ll
also mention something about the Hawkeyes.
