The Top 10 Radio Stations To Have Graced My Ears
10. WLAC Nashville—mid to late 50’s-- introduced a    white boy living in small Illinois farm town to the wonders of R&B.
  9. KOMA-Oklahoma City-50’s & 60’s-- brought rock to the small town west at night with their booming 50 kw signal.
  8. WCCO-Minneapolis—50-s-60’s & 70’s--covered the entire state of Minnesota like a small town.  What public service and entertainment was all about.
  7. KBUL-Salt Lake City 2000-today The best country station in America.
  6. KSF0-San Francisco 1960’s Greatest jock line-up ever with Don Sherwood, Al “Jazzbo” Collins, Jack    Carney and Jim (Newlywed Game) Lange.
  5. WLS-Chicago  50’s-60’s-70’s  defined Top 40 radio.
  4. KPEN-FM San Francisco-60’s-70’s-80’s  led the way for FM radio.  Gary Gielow & Jim Gabbert were cutting edge in a city that, because of the hills, was murder on FM signals.  Later became KIOI making them the first station ever where their call letters reflected the dial position.
  3. KBCO Boulder—70’s’s through today—Clear Channel is the owner but wisely kept alive the programming and unique feel started by Bob & Diane Greenlee (go Iowa State).  A strong case can be made KBCO is the best radio station in America today.
  2.

KIOA/KSO Des Moines—late 50’s/early 60’s.  These two Top 40 Rockers battled tooth and nail to dominate the ratings in Central Iowa and the excitement that came through the speakers caused me to dream of someday owning my own radio station.  “News on the hour with Max Rauer, Dic Youngs and Hotdog Harold Moore, Dick Vance and Bobbi Matson were the folks that made radio what I wanted to do with my life.

  1. KEKB-FM Grand Junction, Colorado 80’s and 90’s.  Why number 1?  Because it was mine.  Starting with a dream Jan and I applied for a frequency in ’79, we got it on the air in “84.  And from ’86 thru 1999 when we sold to a publicly trade company, KEKB was always number one.  So it worked.  A staff that was second to none and country at a time i.e. Garth Brooks, was king KEKB-FM ruled Colorado radio west of the Continental Divide.  Plus, after the sale, it provided the wonderful lifestyle we enjoy today.

  4. Tonto Bar & Grill--Cave Creek, Arizona--Golf course food never tasted so good as it does at Grand Junction native Eric Flatt's (he's Shari and Dave's son) dining establishment along side the Cafe Creek golf course.  Of course this isn't exactly your normal golf course snack bar.  It's a part of the Rancho Manana Resort.  Eric's restaraunt features a great wine list and food that is beyond description.  Don't ever visit the Valley of the Sun without a drive northward to Cave Creek and Tonto Bar and Grill.
  3. Il Bistro--Grand Junction--A very comfortable Main Street restaraunt featuring great service, great Italian food and a no music, no TV atmosphere that allows for quiet dinner conversation.  What a concept!
  2. A Pacific Café—Kapaa Kauai, Hawaii—go for the sea bass, indescribable.
  1. Buena Vista—The home of Irish Coffee and great breakfasts.  Number one for sentimental reasons like riding a cable car and singing Christmas carols with friends on Christmas Eve 1963, my first ever Christmas away from home and winding up at the BV. 43 years later I celebrated my 65th birthday in the same location.

TOP 10 Columnists (as rated by a geezer)
After almost five years of weekly columning in the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel one realizes how difficult it is to compose interesting thoughts in a readable manner over time.  Below are folks who accomplish that in spades.  And special recognition go to those who are published two or three times a week.   Staring at a blank computer screen and creating winning words and unique thoughts multiple times in a 7 day period over the years is indeed yeoman's work.
10. Jim Armstrong - Denver Post and AOL sports columnist

  9. Terry Frei, Denver Post and ESPN.com.  I've been reading Mr. Frei since the days of his covering the Colorado Rockies hockey team.  Hello 1970's and whatever happened to Krazy George?  Mr. Frei not only is a killer columnist but his books, "Horns, Hogs and Nixon Coming: Texas vs. Arkansas" "Third Down and a War to Go", and especially "77,  Denver, The Broncos and Coming Of Age are simply put, wonderful reads.
  8. Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal.  Her every Saturday column is a must read for anyone relishing great writing be they Republican or Democrat.  Ms. Noonan, a former Nixon and Reagan speech writer, strings words together so well it causes awe and envy in any one who has ever attempted being published on a regular basis.
  7. Tom Friedman - labors under the handicap of writing about world matters (boring) and The New York Times (more boring) but Friedman’s “The World Is Flat” is the best book of the last 20 years and his columns are eminently readable no matter how dry the subject.
  6. TJ Simers -  A Times - a man who left DeKalb, Illinois even though Cindy Crawford was a cheerleader for the Barbs (yes barbed wire was invented in DeKalb, Ill.) This LA columnist, who used to cover the Bronco's for a Denver daily, delights in pulling the nose hairs of any and all members of the Los Angeles sports establishment.
  5.

Joel Stein - also LA Times, used to write for Time magazine.  Terribly bright, terribly young and terribly funny.

  4. Dave Barry - currently on hiatus but when writing the absolute funniest weekly columnist going.
  3. Stanley Bing - Fortune magazine.  Gets the inside back cover in Fortune ala Rick Reilly in Sports Illustrated, Bing (a nom de plume for a CBS executive) consistently delivers funny, readable columns about the world of business.
  2. Robert Kirby - sltrib.com/columnists—This Salt Lake City Tribune writer and former policeman is a treat to read three times a week.  You can’t imagine how hard it is to be 600 words, three times a week, funny.
  1. Rick Reilly...The King!  Although he is now serving out a non-compete after leaving Sports Illustrated to join ESPN at 2 million dollars a year.  And if that's not enough Reilly also earns 25k for an hour long speech plus penned a movie "Leatherheads" starring George Clooney.  These are the kind of lucky breaks we could enjoy if only we also happened to be incredibly talented.
